The Upper Dolpo Trek is Nepal’s ultimate hidden wilderness expedition, located in the remote northwest rain-shadow of the Dhaulagiri massif. Protected entirely within Shey Phoksundo National Park—Nepal's largest national park—this vast, high-altitude desert is heavily celebrated as a pristine repository of ancient Tibetan culture and raw wilderness. It stands as an elite destination reserved for seasoned explorers looking to completely escape mass tourism. This forbidden landscape requires a specialized Restricted Area Permit (RAP) and a minimum of two travelers plus a licensed guide, making solo trekking strictly illegal.
Spanning a flexible 22-to-26-day timeframe, Upper Dolpo features a stark, windswept landscape that transitions from deep river canyons to multiple high-altitude mountain passes like Kang La (5,350m), Saldang La (5,200m), and Numa La (5,115m). These demanding alpine crossings reward your physical stamina with boundless, staggering views that stretch endlessly into the Tibetan plateau. The region's approach treats hikers to the hypnotic, crystal-clear turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake (3,611m). Surrounded by vertical rock cliffs, this deep-blue alpine water basin contains no aquatic life, allowing it to act as a flawless mirror for the surrounding peaks.
The ultimate destination of this frontier journey is the mythical Shey Gompa (4,343m) at the base of the sacred Crystal Mountain. Built in the 11th century, this region serves as the global heartland of the ancient pre-Buddhist Bon-Po cultural traditions, where centuries-old nomadic lifestyles remain entirely frozen in time. Because the region is so isolated and sparsely populated, the natural ecosystem remains completely intact. The arid cliffs and deep granite gorges serve as one of the world's most critical sanctuaries for the endangered Snow Leopard, alongside herds of Himalayan Blue Sheep, Musk Deer, and Tibetan Wolves.
Because it sits in a rain-shadow zone, Upper Dolpo is one of the few regions in Nepal ideal for summer and monsoon trekking (June to September), remaining dry when the rest of the country experiences heavy rains. The entire circuit loop requires a 100% fully self-sufficient camping setup. Himal Trek Nepal completely manages your experience. We secure your specialized government RAPs, coordinate your complex internal flights to the Juphal airstrip via Nepalgunj, handle full camping kitchen logistics, and pair your group with elite, licensed local guides equipped with advanced high-altitude rescue tools.
Day 01
Welcome to Nepal! A Himal Trek Nepal representative will greet you at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). A private vehicle will transfer you to your hotel in Thamel. Spend the day relaxing, handling last-minute gear adjustments, and preparing for the epic journey ahead.
Day 02
While our office handles the strict Department of Immigration Restricted Area Permits (RAP), you will enjoy a guided tour of Kathmandu’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, and Swayambhunath. In the afternoon, join your expedition leader for a comprehensive route and safety briefing.
Day 03
Take an afternoon domestic flight from Kathmandu to the sub-tropical city of Nepalgunj in southwestern Nepal. You will check into your hotel and spend the night here to catch the early morning mountain connection into the Himalayas.
Day 04
Board a thrilling morning hopper flight to the dirt airstrip of Juphal. Meet your local porter team, assemble your gear, and begin trekking. The trail descends through terraced fields and follows the roaring Bheri River to Dunai, the administrative capital of Dolpo.
Day 05
Cross the suspension bridge over the Bheri River and turn north, entering the protected boundaries of Shey Phoksundo National Park. The trail winds alongside the Phoksundo River through lush forests of pine and bamboo, leading to the small settlement of Chhekpa.
Day 06
Follow the river trail through narrow gorges that slowly open into wider sub-alpine valleys. Walk past cedar and birch woods to reach the campsite near the Amchi Hospital, a local center practicing traditional Tibetan herbal medicine.
Day 07
Climb a steep, rocky ridge that rewards you with an incredible view of a 167-meter-high waterfall draining the lake basin. A gentle descent brings you to Ringmo, a traditional mud-brick Bon-Po village perched right on the edge of the hypnotic, turquoise waters of Phoksundo Lake.
Day 08
A vital rest day to adapt to the altitude. Explore the shores of this deep alpine basin, which contains no aquatic life and acts as a perfect mirror for the Kanjirowa peaks. Visit the ancient local Bon-Po monastery on the opposite cliffs and interact with the local community.
Day 09
This is one of the most thrilling walking days. Follow a narrow, dramatic trail carved directly into the vertical rock cliffs high above the turquoise waters. The path drops down to the northern floodplain of the lake, where our crew sets up camp in a remote pine grove.
Day 10
Climb steadily through a narrow glacial valley, crossing a network of freezing mountain streams. The vegetation thins out completely as you break into a high, stark world of slate and gravel. Establish camp at Phoksundo Bhanjyang, right at the foot of the pass.
Day 11
Wake before dawn to conquer the ultimate physical challenge: Kang La Pass (5,350m). A slow, demanding climb over scree and snow brings you to the prayer flags, opening into a boundless, windswept panorama of the Tibetan plateau. Descend steeply into the mystical inner valley to arrive at the legendary Shey Gompa.
Day 12
Explore the 11th-century clay-stone monastery sitting under the shadow of the sacred Crystal Mountain. This region is the untouched heartland of pre-Buddhist spirituality. Walk the local pilgrimage circuits, view ancient murals, and experience a nomadic lifestyle frozen entirely in time.
Day 13
Leave Shey Gompa and ascend a barren, lunar-like landscape to cross the windswept Saldang La Pass (5,200m). After taking in views of the arid northern deserts, descend into the upper Nangkong Valley to arrive at Saldang, the largest permanent agricultural settlement in Upper Dolpo.
Day 14
Follow the high, arid banks of the Nangkong River through terraced fields of mountain barley. Pass through remote, block-shaped stone villages to reach Yangze Gompa, an ancient and deeply isolated monastery belonging to the orthodox Bon tradition.
Day 15
Backtrack slightly through the valley and head south toward the high pastures. The trail follows remote trade routes where you will likely encounter local yak caravans transporting salt and wool across the borders. Camp in the high alpine pastures near Sibu.
Day 16
Follow the riverbed before climbing a steep, arid ridge that leads into the wide-open Tarap Valley. You will cross high grazing lands where local nomads camp with their yaks before setting up your staging camp at the base of the Jeng La Pass.
Day 17
Tackle a long, slow uphill climb to conquer Jeng La Pass (5,090m). The summit provides a magnificent close-up panorama of the massive Dhaulagiri range. Descend into the vast, flat valley of Dho Tarap, one of the highest permanent human settlements on Earth.
Day 18
Enjoy a relaxed day interacting with the indigenous people of Dho, whose clothing, language, and customs are directly tied to Tibet. Visit the local monasteries, check out the traditional stone architecture, and let your body recover from the high passes.
Day 19
Leave the flat plains of Dho Tarap and head west into a rugged, narrow valley. The trail climbs steadily alongside a glacial stream, entering a raw landscape of scree fields and high mountain pastures. Camp at the base of Numa La.
Day 20
Complete your final major pass crossing. A steady push over snow and moraine brings you to the summit of Numa La Pass (5,115m) for a breathtaking look back at the entire Upper Dolpo landscape. Descend to the riverside camp of Pelung Tang.
Day 21
Follow a long, steady downhill descent that loops back toward the lower valleys. The stark, barren desert landscape slowly shifts back into deep canyons lined with pine trees and waterfalls as you lose altitude rapidly.
Day 22
Complete your foot journey with a gentle morning walk that backtracks through the villages to the Juphal airstrip. Celebrate the successful completion of this world-class expedition with your guides, porters, and camp crew over a final mountain dinner.
Day 23
Board your early morning flight out of Juphal to Nepalgunj, followed immediately by your connecting flight straight back to Kathmandu. Our private vehicle will transfer you back to your Thamel hotel for a long hot shower and a farewell celebration dinner.
Day 24
Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before our team meets you for your private transfer to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) three hours prior to your international flight home, concluding your legendary expedition with Himal Trek Nepal.
