Trip Overview

A 5-to-7-day itinerary is the perfect duration for a first-time Bhutan tour. It allows you to comfortably explore the essential Western Bhutan circuit—Thimphu, Paro, and Punakha—without rushing through the mountain passes. Like Tibet, Bhutan does not allow entirely independent tourism for most nationalities. You must book your tour through a registered travel operator and pay a mandatory daily Sustainable Development Fee (SDF).

Trip Overview

Day 1

  • The Flight: The flight into Paro International Airport offers jaw-dropping views of Mount Everest and Mount Jomolhari.
  • Afternoon: Meet your mandatory local guide and drive 1 hour to Thimphu, the capital city.
  • Sightseeing: Visit the massive Buddha Dordenma (a 169-foot bronze Buddha overlooking the valley) and the historic Tashichho Dzong (the fortress-monastery housing the government).

Day 2

  • Morning: Drive from Thimphu to Punakha (approx. 2.5 hours).
  • Dochula Pass: Stop at this 3,100-meter mountain pass to see panoramic Himalayan views and 108 memorial stupas.
  • Afternoon: Walk across the suspension bridge to explore the magnificent PunakhaDzong, widely considered the most beautiful fortress in Bhutan.

Day 3

  • Morning: Hike through rice paddies to visit Chimi Lhakhang (The Fertility Temple), famous for its unique local folklore and murals.
  • Afternoon: Drive back across the mountains to the scenic valley of Paro (approx. 3.5 hours).
  • Evening: Stroll through Paro's quaint, colorful main street for local crafts and tea houses.

Day 4

  • The Hike: Dedicate your morning to trekking up to Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest). This sacred monastery clings precariously to a sheer cliff face 900 meters above the valley floor.
  • Duration: The round-trip hike takes roughly 5 to 6 hours. You can stop at a hillside cafeteria halfway up for tea and views.
  • Evening: Unwind from the trek with a traditional Bhutanese Hot Stone Bath, where river stones heated by wood fires are infused with local medicinal herbs.

Day 5

  • Morning: Visit Ta Dzong, a circular ancient watchtower that now houses the National Museum of Bhutan.
  • Afternoon: Tour the Rinpung Dzong, a fortress used to film scenes from the movie Little Buddha. Try your hand at Archery, the national sport of Bhutan, at a local field.

Day 6

Transfer to Paro Airport for your morning flight back to Kathmandu, Delhi, or Bangkok.
